The story

The hunter was 33 days early. She told Trooper Alex Wick that Google said September 1st. His own search got an AI Overview hedged with "depending on the specific zone".

Kodiak's Unit 8, every island southeast of Shelikof Strait's center line, opens October 8th. The Alaska Peninsula across the strait opens September 1st. Google itself says AI Overviews "can and will make mistakes."

From Shelikof Strait the camera drops to Bull Lake and the trooper's AI search, pulls back to five bird zones, then sinks to the mud where the $150 lands.

The hunter turned herself in the same afternoon. She pleaded no contest and was fined $150, the Alaska Beacon reported.

Is reading the zone before the date a fair duty for every hunter with a phone?
