What you are looking at

The reserve

Southcentral Alaska keeps gas in an underground field near Kenai, run by CINGSA. Utilities fill it in summer and draw on it in winter. The level is published once a day and never archived, so this page reads it and keeps the history.

The demand

How much gas the region burns is not published at all. We estimate it from the Anchorage forecast. The model and its error history are included in the raw data linked below.

The gap

Subtract what came out of storage from what the region likely burned, and what is left came from somewhere nobody reports daily. That residual is the number no other source publishes.

This page will never tell you whether the lights stay on

Measured storage, modeled demand, and missing data offer no verdict on reliability. Equipment failures can disrupt supply despite reassuring figures. Supply side deliverability is not public, so these numbers can't predict whether the lights stay on.

CINGSA keeps no archive, so this series exists only because it is collected daily and committed. It begins August 5th. Storage is measured. The peak is model output, shown on its own scale because the two quantities are different in kind and sharing one axis would imply a relationship the data does not claim.

CINGSA has no new readings. Maintenance scheduled until September 21st.

What is not measured by anyone

Subtract measured storage withdrawals from modeled demand to estimate non CINGSA supply. On September 13th, the result was 128.6 MMcf per day against modeled demand of 126, or 102.1 percent. Storage filling explains the excess over demand. This includes field production and Hilcorp storage movement, which public data can't separate.

Current Power Costs

The average retail price of electricity in Alaska, measured by the US Energy Information Administration and published monthly. It is one number for the whole state, so it shows which way prices are moving and not what any one utility charges.

A household paid 12.48 cents on Ketchikan Public Utilities and 69.95 cents on Alaska Village Elec Coop, Inc. That spread is the reason the single state figure above answers almost nobody, and it is why this page shows both.
