The story

Climatologist Rick Thoman told KYUK it has happened at every airport in the region since April.

NOAA fine-tuned that AI model on a grid of surface, balloon and satellite observations.

A year ago, global models had Halong's track and missed its shift east, Thoman said. A lack of balloon launches across Western Alaska may have played a role, KYUK reported.

NOAA's AI models went operational later, in December 2025.

A faster model can't fill in a reading nobody took.

Maps show the grid NOAA's AI model learned from, the Delta's dark stations, Halong's turn east and its saltwater on the tundra.

How much should the Delta trust a faster forecast while its own airport stations go days without a reading?
